Exploration - PATHFINDING

Exploration - Pathfinding

Part of what makes Old School Runescape so special is the vast, open world.  Players can quite literally go attempt anything, at any point.  Exploring the massive continents with instanced encounters like temple trekking would give a whole new level of freedom to players, both new and old.

How it works -

When the player receives a Pathfinding Contract, they will be required to locate the "Contract Location" In general, this will be an NPC, a flag, or a set of footprints that must be tracked.  Upon reaching this marker, the player must select the option to start the instances, after which the player will enter a series of encounters similar to Temple Trekking. These instances will involve combat, skill challenges, and side paths that will reward more loot and larger amounts of XP.

Skill Challenges -

In order to pass into the next section of the instance, the player will be required to complete challenges. Often times the entrance to the next section of the instance will be blocked, or an object will need to be removed, or there will be an obstacle in the path. The Challenge will be based on the current level of skill the player has. There will always be multiple paths, however the most direct path will always be the most challenging.

Functionality -

The Player is able to bring anything they like into the instances.  If the player is killed during the instance, their items will appear in a gravestone at the "Contract Location" marker. The penalty for death during a Contract is merely slower XP rates.

Encounters -

During the Pathfinding Contract instances, they may encounter NPCs that require assistance, monsters that may waylay the player in combat, or they may encounter creatures that pick the players pocket of important items for the contract. These encounters can be avoided by using the longer paths that grant lower XP rates.

How it fits -

Pathfinding is one of the mechanics of Exploration that will make one of the smallest infringements on current gameplay.  Temple Trekking is the basis for the idea of Land Contracts, and since it has similarities, it fits right in with the current way players play the game.  The option to undertake unique encounters during the time the player is already exploring the world of Geleinor just enhances the way the game can be played.
